Of Mice and Men Inquiry Activity
Why do we hold onto things when we know we should let go? We all have things in our
lives that we no longer need to hold onto but that gut feeling deep down tells us to hold on. In the
novel, Candy has a dog who is struggling in it's old age. We see some of the characters in this
chapter urge Candy to put his dog out of it's misery. Candy knows it is the right thing to do, but
something is holding on to him and he just can't quite let go. In the novel the Candy makes this
statement about his dog. "Yeah I had 'Im ever since he was a pup." ( Steinbeck 25). In this short, yet
significant quote we see the importance of preserving the past. Candy doesn't want to let go of not
only his dog but the past that will go with it. We hold on tight to things that comfort us and remind us
of who we are even when we know It's time to let go.
